The widespread effects of California’s housing challenges

Many Californians view increasing homelessness and housing costs as a threat to California’s future. The cost of home ownership and rent are high and keep rising.

Housing is exceedingly expensive for most Californians

The cost of a house in California remains the second-most expensive in the nation, second only to Hawaii. Californians spend a disproportionate amount of their income on housing compared to the rest of the nation.

Supply shortages build on the pressure of housing costs

New construction permits are not meeting the demand. Overcrowding in California is high, especially for rental units – which is more than twice the national rate. High land prices and labor shortages create an environment of unaffordability.

Experts say that California needs to double its current rate of housing production (85,000 units per year) to keep up with expected population growth and prevent prices from further increasing, and needs to quadruple the current rate of housing production over the next seven years in order for prices and rents to decline.
